グロテスカ Gurotesuka Typeface

I am designing a typeface and learning kanji. One kanji per day. At the end, if all is going well, there will be a beautiful font with many glyphs.

Task: design a wide Japanese inspired grotesque typeface.

Already 66-ish glyphs

グロテスカ (gu•ro•te•su•ka) is intentionally misspelled word grotesque in Japanese. Correct will be グロテスク (gu•ro•te•su•ku)

How are we doing so far

Day 6 (+6 kana)

And here is a big update with more latin, kerning and a bit of kana For now only katakana chracters. Hiragana is very hard to design.

Day 5 (+1 kanji)

Time managment failed. And I had to take 2 week break. But hey, new kanjies here. And everything now wider.

Day 4 (+1 kanji)

Aha, apperently 円口田 do have different height and sit differently on the baseline. Actually still not sure where should be a baseline for kanjies. Seams like kanji should sit a bit narrower than latins. Also, height of symbols are different and I have to study or google each to see the relationshp and how other’s design those before. Adding today 力 for strength. It looks super simmilar to Katakana ka カ (together 力カ ), but seams ka is a bit smaller. Here is the explanation. Also, fixing the base line for all kanjis. Making them a bit wider to reflect the nature of typeface. Now, I can make small sentances to test the font.

Also, I can almost write some brand name now 田力本 I think it’s like rice, power, real?

guroteska illsutrator

Day 3 (+4 kanji)

Adding and learning four new kanjis: 円 – circle, yen, round, 口 - mouth, 田 - rice field, and 目 - eye ball, eye sight. All of them are square and easy to draw and remeber. Also, made small font setting for kanjies and Latins so they play nice together. Still have a powerful move with kanji for one, two and three.

Day 2 (+1 kanji)

Didn’t fail the second day and here is kanji for 月 moon and month. Font also updated.

Day 1 (+2 kanji) guroteska illsutrator

guroteska glyphs

Started 22.02.

Latin: a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, q, r, s, t, u, v, w, x, y, z.

Kanji: 日本

Prepared promo-page and materials. No kerning or spacing done.
